Getting The Most Value

A Canadian family that spends $2000 on $1.05/L regular grade fuel a year would accumulate 9500 Petro-Points without factoring in promotional bonus point collection periods. It some cases, it could take several years to accumulate enough points for high value rewards, so what is the best way use the points?

Related: Aeroplan Credit Cards Comparison

The best use of Petro-Points are the car wash rewards, topping out at 1.57% for The Works. The Wash & Go cards, Season Passes and Ontario CAA membership represent the next best rate of return, however require tens of thousands in points which would take years to accumulate. The worst way to spend Petro-Points are on assorted gift cards and the $500 off travel from itravel.com, which gives you a 0.20% return. Your best bet is to stick with the car washes!

In-store and digital rewards netted a surprisingly high return, but are likely not the best use of reward points given that concessions and digital items usually go on sale. As a result, both categories have been taken out of the running.

Preventing Points From Expiring

Petro-Points will not expire as long as you are an active member. If an account is inactive for 12 consecutive months, all accumulated points associated with the account will be forfeit.

Exchanging Petro-Points

Cathay Pacific’s Asia Miles

Petro-Points can be exchanged for Cathay Pacific’s Asia miles which can be redeemed for rewards including travel and merchandise. This is a one way exchange where Petro-Points can be converted in increments of 10,000 for 1,000 Asia Miles.

Are They Worth It?

Spending $2,000 for one year’s worth of fuel would net you one free car wash; not a very big incentive! Like most rewards programs you will do better if you focus on maximizing bonuses and promotions. However, this program probably still isn’t worth it unless you only buy your gas at Petro Canada.

The Esso Extra program, on the other hand, will get you almost 4 car washes with the same spending if you purchase only regular fuel and don’t take advantage of bonuses. If you buy premium fuel, that number triples to nearly 12 car washes. One free $10 car wash per month isn’t a bad deal considering you don’t have to do much to earn them!

I used to collect Petro Points for 3-4 years because I had the CIBC Petro Point MasterCard and it was my primary card before but last year I realized it's not worthy as the return rate is barely 1% overall including the 2-cent per liter saving on gas, so I searched your site and found the much better credit cards. Nevertheless, I collected 500,000 Petro Points from the 3-4 years time frame that I was using. I redeemed for CAA dollars twice for membership renewal but since now I just started driving my new car, I'm redeeming the points from time to time for "New: SuperWash Wash & Go Card: 5 Washes" and register each of them for the "additional one free SuperWash" so by spending 40,000 points I'm getting 6 deluxe carwash which is not too bad.

Glad you've found better credit card options Leon. Petro points really could use a bump up in value I think as right now they just don't provide enough incentive to convince anyone to buy their gas there if they crunch the numbers.

Sounds the way you are redeeming them is about the best you could hope for in terms of value.

@Leon 500,000 points is no small feat! You would think that there would be a much higher return with the effort that Petro-Can spends marketing the program. I think the CAA membership one of the better redemption options, especially if you made use of the service on the odd occasion. The peace of mind is nice to have. Glad you've found another card with better rewards that suits your needs.

I signed up for Petro Points a couple years ago just because I had a Petro-Can near my house. I since moved and have been going to Shell more for the Airmiles, especially when you get money of your fuel purchase for shopping at Safeway. Seems to be better loyalty rewards bang for your buck. I would be curious to see a comparison of all the fuel rewards programs out there. Petro Points vs. Airmiles vs. Esso Extra vs. the new Husky points program vs. any others I'm missing. For most people we all have to buy gas, which program is going to get my butt on a beach the fastest.

@Kevin Speaking of the beach, how have your experiences been with redeeming the Air Miles? I've only ever tried redeeming for flights with Aeroplan points. The restrictions and taxes were pretty frustrating but you're right; Everyone has to fill up, you might as well look for the program that gives you the best bang for the buck! Maybe a travel rewards card will get you to the beach faster ;)

Using The CIBC Petro Points MC as an annual fee free way to earn Cathay Pacific Miles is a great option. There are very few ways to earn these miles at essentially $1=a little more than 1 mile (after the spending bonus). This way too, the Cathay Pacific miles don't expire, and give you a lot of options.

Another not as known redemption option is to use is 1000 points equals $1 at itravel2000.com equaling 0.50% reward rate.

Thanks for raising these points Wes. I did know about the Cathay Pacific transfer but I didn't realize it was more than 1 mile per $1 spent with the CIBC Petro Points MC.

I rake up over 3 million petro points a year. I use them to travel at itravel2000. The numbers you posted on the redemption for itravel2000 is wrong, unless of coarse this just change but I doubt that.

Thanks for the comment Rich. That's amazing that you are able to amass so many Petro Points in a single year. How do you do it exactly?

In terms of the redemption rates, some of the higher numbers were off a little bit. They should all be a 0.5% return. I have corrected the table. Here is the link to the iTravel2000 redemption rates on the Petro Canada website:

Petro Canada just updated its rewards program. Some of the info listed here is outdated, specifically the 1$ for 2000points is now 1$ for 1000 points.
