How To Eliminate Your Home Phone Bill And Long Distance Charges!

It is clear that the internet has revolutionized the way we communicate by introducing email, instant messaging, video conferencing, message forums, newsgroups, and blogs. But not only that, it is also becoming the only infrastructure necessary to do many of the things that used to require special mediums before like making phone calls, watching TV, listening to music, and so on. Yes, the internet can even help you completely eliminate your monthly home phone bill as well as the long distance charges you may have become accustomed to!

Most people have heard of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) as it has been a big buzz word over the past several years. However, many people don’t fully understand how it works and think it is probably too complicated for them to bother using. That couldn’t be further from the truth! There are tons of VoIP devices and services on the market today and many of them are geared towards average people with little technical know how so that everyone can take full advantage of it. But how do you know which VoIP device or service provider to choose?

How To Choose A VoIP Provider

The main barrier stopping more people from getting into VoIP is not knowing what their options are nor how to make a decision about which VoIP service to use. In my new guide to VoIP devices and services, I have tried to make this decision process much easier for you by compiling all the best VoIP devices and services on one page. I have included enough information about each of them along with specific scenarios you can identify with to help you make the right choice.

In addition, you will find a large feature comparison table that lists the most important features a person would need from their VoIP provider and indicates which providers offer those features. That way you can easily eliminate several choices with a quick glance at the table so you don’t have to waste time investigating a VoIP service that ultimately won’t meet your needs.

Do I Need A Computer?

No! The best part about VoIP is that it is very flexible. You don’t necessarily need a computer to take advantage of it and, in some cases, you don’t even need an internet connection! You can even use VoIP with your existing home phone or cell phone to make long distance calls without even having an internet connection. Consult the feature comparison table to quickly see what VoIP services can be used without a computer or an internet connection.

How Much Does VoIP Cost?

Well, here’s the good news! Many VoIP services are completely free or at least have free components to them! It all depends on your needs, but one thing is for certain, you will be paying a lot less with VoIP than you are with your existing service and often times you will get a whole lot more for your money too. The prices for VoIP services are typically billed on a yearly basis, not monthly, or at very low per minute rates and when you do pay an annual subscription fee, unlimited long distance within Canada and the USA is typically included at no extra cost. In some cases, you can call all over the world without ever having to pay a per minute rate to do so.

I've been using voip.ms for the last 3 years to replace my home phone. My monthly bill is about $5.00 to $10.00 (taxes in). To use voip.ms you need to get an obihai device and have it programmed. In order for you to get phone service in your whole house you need to disconnect the line coming from outside from your telco, otherwise the obihai device will not work to provide service inside. What I did was to disconnect the phone line outside with the Telco (Bell canada), then pluged in the obihai to the telephone jack and to my router and connect my Panasonic cordless set to it. Bingo, my home home is serviced by Voip.ms (Google it)

One of the best feature in my opinion is that I get voice mails emailed to me within an mp3 file, which I also forward to my wife automatically. So even if our Internet is down we can be reached via voice mail. I kept my current home number when I moved from Bell to Voip.ms. However don't tell your Telco, let Voip.ms take care of the move for you, otherwise you could lose your number.

For long distances we use Google voice, connected yet with another obihai device, to which I've connected a cordless phone. Calls within Canada and US are free and long international calls are about $0.05 per minute depending where you are calling. Unfortunately you cannot get a number with Google voice in Canada, so we only use it for outgoing long distance calls.

I use WhatsApp for video conferencing, phone calls and messaging. So far no costs aside from having a phone number. International calling fees would run into the hundreds if I did not use this.
