About Stephen and HowToSaveMoney.ca

Here’s what I think...

Money is a medium of exchange.

When you give someone your money, you get something in return.

But are you getting a fair deal? Can you do better?

Since launching HowToSaveMoney.ca back in 2010, my goal has always been to provide the best tips, tools and techniques to help you maximize your money.

Because consumers need to be educated now more than ever.

Because companies spend millions advertising their products to us. That’s their job - they exist to make money.

Our job as consumers is to arm ourselves with knowledge. We need to be selective and smart with our spending. It’s our job to protect our finances and ensure that we have reserves for retirement and the rainy days.

I believe we can achieve those goals while living better and experiencing more of the good things life has to offer by saving money without cutting back.

Yes, it takes both discipline and superior knowledge to get it done.

That is why I consistently provide well researched and detailed articles. Each article is meant to be a complete guide to help you save money in one area. The discipline to apply that knowledge is up to you.

My question is: are you willing to do the work?

You’re not alone. You are now part of a community of Canadian smart savers. We are all here to support each other.

So I hope you stay, soak up the knowledge, see the results, and tell us about it.

About Stephen Weyman

aboutstephenmid.jpgI’m 34 years old. Born and raised on the East Coast. I’m a money nerd, super detailed by nature, a techie by trade...and an overall good guy (go ahead - ask my mother).

I’m a family man - married to Maria for almost 10 years with two young kids. I grew up with a Dad who is a respected Investment Advisor. So early on, I learned to treat money responsibly.

Although it was not until I was in my early twenties when I saw the proverbial light.

You see, I was researching buying a memory card for my digital camera when I stumbled upon vastly different prices at different stores.

Back then a decent-sized card cost $150 new at Staples - a whole lot of money to a unemployed university student. In a flyer I saw the exact same card on sale for $100 at FutureShop. My online research also taught me that Staples had a 150% lowest price guarantee (110% now), so I was able to price match it at Staples for $75.

That is when I realized that I could pay much LESS for a product without sacrificing quality.

Why would I pay $150 when I could get the same exact thing for half of that price? Of course, the less I spent, the more I would have in my pocket to use as I please. That was my point of no return.

Since then, I became an avid deal forum reader. I soaked up what I learned and applied it all to my daily life.

Negotiation did not come easy for me. In fact, I was very anxious when I started negotiating to get reduced cost. That price match I mentioned earlier had me shaking in my boots. It was actually very common for managers to try and deny legitimate price matches.

However, by planning ahead, staying calm, and knowing all the fine details of the Staples price match policy I was able to secure the deal - it was exhilarating.

Since then, I always try to push through every anxiety I am feeling and keep going. This has led to me making smarter decisions with my finances.

My effort over the years were worthwhile: I paid off my first house in 5 years. I also have savings and investments working for me so I will be prepared for the future.

How This Site Got Started

It was 2007 and I was 26 working full-time at a local tech company when I registered HowToSaveMoney.ca. However, it wasn’t until 2010 when I wrote my first post. Check it out here. My first-born daughter was only three months old then.

At the time, there was a lot of information about saving money online but most of it was either buried deep inside the bowels of deal forums or very generic and targeted to a more global audience.

I wanted to change that - I wanted to bring these money saving techniques to people who didn’t have the time to read through 50 page forum threads all day long.

I wanted to present it all in one complete article that left you would know EXACTLY what to do by the time you were done reading it - not 10 internet searches and 10 hours later. Sure, some articles may be long and involved - but you’ll always know exactly what to do next.

So, in the summer of 2010, I launched the site and made it happen and still do my best to make it happen here every day.
