If you are unfamiliar with the Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum rewards program, then you can catch up by reading our complete guide to the Shoppers Optimum program to better understand the contents of this post.
This Saturday is a 20x Points Day at Shoppers Drug Mart, which is a great promotion in its own right. However, from time to time the stars align in such a way that it becomes possible to get 40x the points when purchasing select products during a 20x points promotion. This Saturday is one of those rare times!
What Products Qualify For 40x Points?
Shoppers has starting carrying a new line of food products called Simply Food which is another one of their store brands much like Life and Nativa Organics. According to reviews I have been reading on various discussion forums the food is very tasty and almost all of the different products they offer are excellent. Here is a partial list of products that they offer under the Simply Food brand:
Chicken Nuggets | Chicken Strips | Chicken Wings | Cookies * | Crackers * | Dips | French Fries | Frozen Vegetables * | Fruit Snacks | Granola Bars * | Jam * | Kettle Chips * | Kettle Popcorn | Pasta Sauce * | Salsa | Shrimp | Tea * | Tortilla Chips
* Items marked with a star have several different flavours or varieties to choose from.
How Much Is 40x Points Worth?
When you purchase a product that qualifies for 40x the points you actually are almost getting that product for free. If you were to spend $100 on simply food products, here is how you would calculate how much you would get back in rewards if redeeming your points at the highest 95,000 points redemption level:
First calculate how many points you will earn:
$100 x 10 regular points per dollars x ( 20x Points Day + 20x Simply Food Bonus ) = 40,000 points
Next calculate how much those points are worth:
40,000 points earned / 95,000 needed to redeem x $170 value of 95,000 points = $71.57
So you can see that you get back $71.57 in points for every $100 you spend on Simply Food products this Saturday. Many of the Simply Food items are also on sale this weekend for even better value! Not only that, but if you decide to save your points and spend them during a bonus redemption event then your 40,000 points would be worth $84.21 which is even closer to the initial $100 that you spent.
Are There Any Catches?
There aren’t really any catches with this promotion as long as you spend at least $50 before taxes to qualify for the 20x points promotion and spend at least $10 before taxes on Simply Food products to qualify for the additional 20x points on those products. Ideally you would purchase all Simply Food products and nothing else to get the full 40x points on your purchase but who’s to say you won’t want to buy something else while you’re there?
The only other possible issue is that it states clearly in the terms and conditions for the 20x Simply Food promotion that it can’t be combined with other Optimum promotions or events. This has proven to be untrue in the past as I have stacked promotions like this many times myself and people have confirmed in forum threads that I have been reading that they were able to stack the 20x Simply Food promotion with last weekends 15x promotion effectively getting 35x the points. Here are the official terms for your reference:
Points are issued according to the net pre tax purchase of $10 or more spent on any Simply Food products using a valid Shoppers Optimum Card® after discounts, redemptions and before taxes. Excludes Shoppers Optimum® MasterCard® points. Not to be used in conjunction with any other Shoppers Optimum Points® promotions or events. While quantities last. We reserve the right to limit quantities. No rainchecks. Offer valid from October 23, 2010 to November 5, 2010. See cashier for details.

Update: I went and purchased almost $100 worth of Simply Food products earlier today along with a few other products and I got 40x the points as expected. My total points for the purchase was just over 40,000 points!
October 23, 2010 @ 12:22 pmOoh too bad I missed it. 40,000 points would be fantastic, but I don't think I could scrounge up $100 of Life Brand or Simply Food products.
October 28, 2010 @ 5:06 amYeah, that's too bad. I meant to post about it sooner, but I only got around to it on Friday just before the event was taking place.
I was only really shooting for $50 in Simply Food but I ended up buying more as I saw different products that I wanted to try. Plus we were going to a party that night so we brought 2 boxes of chicken wings and a box of chicken strips to that. Then I added on a couple of bags of diapers and I was well over $100!
It was nice that they had almost all of the products on sale for this promotion as well which increased the value of the promotion even more.
October 28, 2010 @ 8:58 amNo kidding! 40x would be sweet. I can't believe it.
I do find that Shoppers tends to be too expensive without the points program on 20x or 15x days.
A toothbrush there was $32 (one of those electric Braun ones) and in Wal-mart it was $26.
October 29, 2010 @ 2:53 pmHaha, well believe it! I've also gotten 40x points on an iPod and an XBox 360 years ago. They don't sell either of those products anymore but that was an amazing deal at the time especially since their prices were identical to Futureshop and other gaming and electronics stores! Points were worth more back then as well so I got more money in points than the stuff actually cost (before taxes).
You are right that their prices tend to be higher and you definitely have to watch that when shopping there but their front pages sales are also fantastic and their food flyer is usually pretty decent as well. As long as you know your prices, then you won't pay too much when shopping there. Just stick to the sale items and you will do much better than shopping at Wal-mart! At least most of the time anyway.
