Get Loads Of Free Movies With Scene Rewards

getloadsoffreemovieswithscenerewards.jpg

I've been collecting Scene rewards since late last year because that is when Cineplex FINALLY came to my area after buying out Empire Theatres who had a monopoly around here. Now Cineplex has the monopoly … but at least we have points!

Given that movies at the theatre are outrageously expensive, the program is actually quite generous and there are LOTS of opportunities to maximize your points so you can get free movies almost until your heart's content.

Rob, from Boomer and Echo touched on this subject recently which inspired me to put together my own tips and tricks as I've really been loving and benefiting from this rewards program lately.

When you're done here, you'll also want to check out my guide to saving money at the movies and apply those tips in conjunction with your Scene points to get maximum value.

The Normal (Slow) Way To Earn

The normal way to earn points is simply by joining the program and then either showing your scene card each time you watch a movie at a Cineplex affiliated theatre or getting them to scan the barcode on your Cineplex mobile app.

You typically earn 100 points per movie watched and it takes 1000 points to get a free, no-restrictions, admission ticket to any movie (yes, that means 3D and other upgraded movies too).

Supercharge Your Points Earning Potential

Most points programs have ways to speed up the points accumulation process and Scene has more accelerators than most. Hang on, the wild points-filled ride is about to begin!

Scotia Scene Visa

One of the best ways to pad your points balance in any rewards program is to get the affiliated credit card, if one exists. Some rewards credit cards are mediocre at best, but for a no-fee credit card, the Scene Visa is a pretty decent for movie lovers. You get 2000 4000 (limited time)Scene points just for signing up, which can be redeemed for 4 free movies valued up to $15 each.

Once you have the card, you will earn 1 Scene point for every $1 spent on the card. That won't win it any prizes as the best no-fee credit card, but if you always redeem your points for expensive $15 movies it works out to a 1.5% return on your spending. If you redeem your points for a $10 movie, then the return would be 1% instead.

However, when you use this credit card to buy movie tickets, gift cards and concessions at the theatre, as well as anything on CineplexStore.com including digital movie rentals, digital movie downloads, and even physical DVDs and Blurays, you get 5 points per dollar spent. So even if you just use your card for those purchases, the points will add up fast and give you up to a 10% return on your spending.

Earn Massive Bonuses At The Cineplex Store

I've been doing a lot of shopping at the Cineplex store for all my movie entertainment needs outside of Netflix, and for good reason. The cineplex store runs regular promotions where they attach Scene bonus points to various movies, TV shows, rentals, etc that you may want to purchase. This is in addition to the regular 5 points per dollar spent you get for buying anything at the Cineplex store and the additional 5 points per dollar spent you get for using a Scotia Scene Visa as mentioned above.

Here's an example of how awesome it can get:

How I got 15 free movie tickets buying discounted children's movies:

Until recently, the sum total of my kids movie collection was 2, which were purchased via iTunes for our summer vacation last year. My daughter rarely watches movies or TV and when she does we typically rely on Netflix. That said, I've always wanted to own some of the better childrens movies because kids will watch the same ones over and over again making it actually worth it to own them.

So, when the deal I am am about to describe came along, it was the perfect opportunity to get some of the popular Disney and Pixar movies for her and have some really fun movie nights at home.

Around black friday and boxing day 2013, Cineplex decided to run promotions where they were either offering buy 1 get one free on a ton of DVDs, Blu-rays, and digital movie downloads or a straight 50% discount. The digital download movies I was interested in typically cost $19.99 for SD and $24.99 for HD. I bought some of both, giving me an out of pocket cost of $10-$12.50 per movie.

However, it got even better. In addition to the already great price and standard 125 points per movie, they were attaching a 1000 Scene point bonus to each movie purchased. That meant for the price you would normally pay for 1 digital movie download of $20, you would get 2 digital movie downloads, and 2250 scene points which is enough for 2 free movies at the cinema with 250 points left over.

So for $20 spent out of pocket, I got as much as $85 in value!

These types of bonuses don't come up every day, but I will definitely be checking the Cineplex store every Boxing Day and Black Friday from now on to see if they continue to run these amazing deals.

They do regularly attach 1000 bonus points to various movies from time to time throughout the entire year and have lesser promotions running almost all the time. For this reason, I plan to buy and rent all my movies and TV shows from the Cineplex store for the foreseeable future.

Gift Card Bonuses

Typically twice a year, around Christmas and summer time, Cineplex offers a coupon pack when you spend a certain amount of money buying Cineplex gift cards. This deal is on now where when you purchase a $30 gift you get these coupons for free:

  • Buy 1 get 1 free movie ticket (includes 3D, UltraAVX, IMAX, and VIP).
  • 100 bonus Scene points.
  • 1 free small popcorn.
  • 1 free digital movie rental.

These coupons are already awesome by themselves, so it makes sense to stock up on gift cards for your future movie outings, but you can also use these gift cards for purchases at the Cineplex store.

That means you can save your gift cards for a good Cineplex store promotion and then use them to earn even more scene points through buying discounted movies. This is a fantastic stacking opportunity!

Earn Even With Discounted Movie Passes

You might think you need to purchase a full priced regular ticket to earn Scene points, but most of the time that actually isn't true. I haven't tested all the scenarios, but I have heard you can typically use discounted or FREE movie passes that you got from somewhere else to earn Scene points as well.

That means, instead of spending $12 on a movie to earn 100 points, you may only have to spend half that amount or even nothing to earn those same 100 points. For instance, you can earn points when using discounted movie passes purchased at Costco or almost anywhere else. Sometimes you'll even earn points for the free movie portion when you use a buy one get one free coupon, but they are starting to do that less and less. Check here for all the ways you can get discounted movie tickets.

Earn On Cheap Movie Nights

You'll get those same 100 points if you go to the movies on a Saturday night as well as on a Tuesday cheap night. So it makes even more sense to head out to the movies on cheap night because you'll earn a free movie while spending much less money to do so.

Get 20 bonus points for buying online

Whenever you purchase your movie tickets online instead of directly at the theatre, Cineplex will give you an extra 20 bonus points on top of the standard 100. I assume they do this so they can create a more efficient operation, have shorter ticket lines, and ultimately hire less staff to save on costs. It's definitely a nice extra perk and a great incentive to buy your tickets online, which is more convenient anyway.

Points On Food

Buying food at the movies makes ZERO financial sense, but I still do it sometimes anyway because movie food is awesome. To me, movie food really adds to the movie going experience even though I'm basically lighting money on fire when I order that popcorn.

Fortunately, you can also earn Scene points on food purchases so at least you get something if you decide to burn some cash like me!

SCENEtourage Group Bonuses

You can create a group of friends that are all Scene members and often go to the movies together to earn bonus points. You need to create a group of at least 3 people with a maximum of 10. Then, when 2 of the group's members go to the same movie together, they will both be credited 50 bonus points. Full details here.

The Normal (Crappy) Way To Redeem

The normal way to redeem points would be to spend 1000 points to see your standard movie. You want to avoid that if you can and:

Maximize Your Scene Rewards

You can increase the value of your points by redeeming them in less conventional ways and for more expensive movies. Here's how:

Use Scene With B1G1 Rewards

If you have a BOGO coupon like the one from above when you purchase $30 in gift cards, you can actually use your existing Scene points to buy the first ticket and still get the second ticket for free. That means that you will have to spend no money out of pocket and only redeem 1000 points to get 2 free movies. Sweet!

Redeem For Night Out Packages

If you like to go to the movies with a friend or partner (who doesn't) and you like to complete the experience with movie food, then redeeming your points for a night out reward can give you better value than just redeeming for tickets.

You would normally pay 2000 points for tickets for two people. For just an extra 500 points you can get a night out package instead that includes 2 regular drinks and 1 regular popcorn. That's at least $10 in movie food, which is pretty good value for 500 points.

Reserve Points For Expensive Nights

In addition to reserving your points for expensive types of movies like IMAX, it also makes sense never to use them on a cheap night. You might as well save them for those primetime Saturday night movies that are in high demand.

Use Points For Food

If you are able to get your movie tickets pretty cheaply or you like going to movies exclusively on cheap nights, then you could consider using your points to buy food at the theatre. You can get one of the various combos they offer starting at 1000 points per combo.

Remember To Use Your Gift Cards

If you stocked up on gift cards to get money saving coupons, be sure to use them whenever you don't have enough points to get a free ride. That way you can continually buy and use up gift cards to get more free stuff more often. It's a great cycle to get on that keeps paying dividends.

Other Benefits Of Scene Membership

10% off Tuesday Admission

Tuesday nights are already much cheaper, but the geniuses at Cineplex decided to make it even cheaper when you're a member. Why not save an additional 10% by flashing your black star-studded card?

10% off food

I think they want us all to get fat, because being a member also qualifies you for 10% off all food purchases at the concession stand.

Good article with helpful tips. I noticed a typo, however, in the last paragraph under "10% off food". In the body of the tip, it reads "$10 off all food purchases..." rather than "10% off..." Cheers

If you are buying multiple tickets on-line buy them individually as each purchase/order gets the 100 points plus 20 bonus. A little more hassle but if you have >1 ticket in an order you only get 120 points total.

Good tips. glad to see you like a little and buy the popcorn. The coupon books are not as good as they used to be. They seem to be all short dates coupons aren't they ? Also used to come with a contest PIN. will share this with my husband. we usually collect enough for one or two passes per year and seem to redeem them when we take the whole family out ...

I've seen a lot of people complaining about the coupons becoming worse. However, to me they are fantastic because Empire Theatres did something similar but their coupons were MUCH more limited. They had very specific time restrictions, as in a specific week or month and they ranged over a period of 3-4 months. So you would have 4 coupons each valid within a specific month or several weeks. Who would remember which coupons are valid when? It was a real pain. I bout $30 worth of gift cards and got the coupons this summer and they are all valid throughout the entire summer until September. The deal started in April I think, so that's like a 5 month window to use the coupons, which I consider to be pretty good. I'll definitely use them all before then without any problem if I put in any effort at all to do so.

Another great deal is the "Treats and Seats" combo if you purchase food. It's about $22 or so, depending on where you are, but it gets you a popcorn, drink, and snack, as well as 1000 scene points. If you use those points for a premium movie, then you are drastically reducing your concession costs!

I was just at the movies this afternoon and I was noticing that combo on the board as well. It's great that they are giving away 1000 Scene points along with the combo. It didn't seem to be any higher priced than their typical combos with similar items in it. $23 is an insane price for the combo, but the fact that you could get your up to $20 ticket for free with the 1000 Scene points definitely makes it worth it!
