Free Money: $100 Gift Card And Up To 5% Cash Back On Gas & Groceries

It’s time for another one of those posts where I talk about some company giving away practically free money for doing something that requires very little effort. Last time it was Aeroplan and it worked out VERY well! This time it’s time it’s in the form of a free $100 gift card for signing up for a credit card with no annual fee that I heavily endorse all the time and that is a great addition to your wallet anyway.

Anyone who has spent any time on my site knows that I highly recommend the Smart Cash MasterCard by MBNA because it was the best cash back credit card in Canada for a long time. It used to give 3% cash back on your gas and grocery purchases (5% for new cardholders in the first 6 months) and 1% cash back on all your other purchases, which is a great deal. Unfortunately, MBNA recently announced some changes to the card (you can read about them here) so it isn’t quite as good anymore. But, it is still well above average as far as credit cards go and I currently have two of them in my household and still use them for all our gas and grocery purchases.

How To Get The Free $100 Gift Card

Our friends over at are putting on a holiday promotion where if you apply and are approved for the Smart Cash card I mentioned above, they will send you $100 gift card to your choice of, Toys R Us, Futureshop, or Boston Pizza. Here’s how it works:

1) Click Over To RateSuperMarket’s Holiday Promo Page

First thing you need to do is visit the page for this promotion. There you will find all the details you need to get your free gift card and apply for the credit card. I’ll go through the entire process here too, but they have all the details there as well along with a complete FAQ.

2) Select the MBNA Smart Cash Card

There are two credit cards that qualify for this promotion, but I would definitely choose the Smart Cash because it is by far the superiour card because of the cash back rewards it offers along with some other perks. Be sure to click the orange “Choose This Card” button below the picture of the Smart Cash card on the left hand side of the page.

3) Choose Your $100 Gift Card

Click the orange “Choose This Card” under the gift card you’d like. I’d probably choose the card because of their massive selection and low prices, but if you’re an offline shopper then both Toys R Us and Futureshop are good choices.

4) Enter Your Contact Details For The Giveaway

RateSuperMarket needs your name, email, and phone number so they can keep in touch with you about this promotion. You will need to do one more step after you apply for the actual credit card to claim you gift card (Step 6). They will also sign you up for their email newsletter, but don’t worry you can easily unsubscribe if you don’t like the content they are sending you and your information won’t be shared with anyone else but them.

5) Apply For The Credit Card Using The Online Form

Click the huge orange “Apply Now” button after filling in your details and you will be taken to MBNA’s secure application site Yes, that is MBNA’s official credit card application site! It does have a weird name but they use it for all their credit card applications done online and I’ve used it many times myself over the past several years.

6) Enter The Last 4 Digits Of Your New Credit Card On

Finally you have to wait patiently for your application to be approved. It can happen in as little as 10 days but it can also take up to a couple of months for them to approve you. All my new credit cards have typically come in the mail in the span of a couple of weeks, but it can and does vary. Once you’ve received your new credit card in the mail you need to go back to to enter the last 4 digits of your new credit card number into their site to confirm with them that you were indeed approved and have received your card. They should send you out the details of how to do this by email after you apply.

Is Trustworthy?

Just in case you’ve never heard of RateSuperMarket before this post, I’d thought I’d provide an answer to this question and I’ll respond with a resounding YES! I’ve personally had a nice phone chat with their founder, Kelvin Mangaroo, last year and have multiple conversations with Melissa, their head of marketing, and they are both great energetic people with a passion for helping Canadians get the best rates on all of their financial products. Their site has done a great deal to make researching rates accessible to everyone without a lot of legwork. Believe it or not, but that information was much more scattered and hard to find even just a few years ago. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them or their services any time!

That’s It!

That’s all there is too it. All there’s left to do is to go and claim your free money and an awesome credit card that will keep paying you cash back for years to come!

The changes are the result of the fact TD bought MBNA Canada . In such an uncompetitive financial market as Canada is , that is the result .

Yes, that's definitely the case. I had some details about the purchase in the draft for the article but I decided to edit it out because it kind of took the focus away from the deal at hand and made things more confusing to understand. Instead I just decided to link to the Moneyville article by Robb @ Boomer and Echo that spoke about the changes.

Just a note for those people who might be trying to click over to RateSuperMarket and not being able to get through. This promotion is extremely popular, so I think they are having some server issues from too much traffic on their site. If it doesn't work right now, come back later and try again.
