Credit Cards

The Famous RBC Avion Transfer Promotions Are Back!

For those who don’t already know, I am a huge advocate of credit cards for people who are capable of using them responsibly as a means of earning thousands of dollars in rewards each year. More importantly if you choose to have a credit card then you should have one of the best credit cards available that gives you the maximum return for the money you spend on the card. If you are unfamiliar with credit cards or unsure if you have the best possible card for your needs, then you should read through our comprehensive credit cards section to get up to speed.

The Royal Bank Avion Platinum or Infinite credit card is one of the best and most flexible travel rewards credit cards in Canada. It is actually the card ranked 3rd in the travel category of our study of the best credit cards available in Canada.

One of the main reasons this card is so good is that you can transfer your points at a 1:1 ratio to either the British Airways Executive Club or the American Airlines AAdvantage rewards programs. Doing so is already a good idea because it eliminates the dollar amount caps on point values that are part of the standard RBC Avion point redemption process. This allows you to book the most expensive routes within a given part of the world without paying more points and thus giving you much greater value. Earn Thousands Of Dollars In Credit Card Rewards

earnthousandsofdollarsincreditcardrewards.jpgHave you ever wondered what the best credit card available in Canada is? Should you choose one with an annual fee or not? Are travel rewards credit cards worth the hassle, or should you just stick to a simple cash back credit card? Is signing up for a credit card even a good idea at all? These are all very good questions and, with the number of credit cards available in the Canadian marketplace today, making the right choice can seem nearly impossible.

With people like you in mind who are overwhelmed with the choices and not sure if it is even possible to determine “the best” credit card, we have put together a complete credit card guide that seeks to answer almost any question you might have in regards to credit cards. Not only that, but we have done a thorough analysis of the best credit cards on the market and come up with our own custom scoring system for comparing them in an objective manner. It takes many important factors into consideration such as the return a typical person can get on their credit card spending, the maximum return you can possibly achieve if you do everything just right, how flexible the credit card rewards are, and the quality of the insurance package that comes with the card.

It is actually our belief that every person who can qualify for a rewards credit card should be using one for every possible purchase that they make, so long as you are able to pay the balance in full every month! Unfortunately, not all people can handle the responsibility of having a credit card and when using one they find themselves overspending and getting deep in debt by spending money they don’t have. But, if you are a responsible spender or saver and you aren’t using a credit card, then you are leaving a lot of money on the table that would otherwise be in your pocket!

How Much Can You Really Earn With Credit Cards?

So all of this sounds nice, but when it comes right down to it, how much can you really earn with credit card rewards? Keep reading » about Earn Thousands Of Dollars In Credit Card Rewards

The MBNA Travel Rewards Platinum MasterCard is a bit of a dark horse when it comes to travel rewards credit in Canada. Not many people have it and almost nobody talks about it! That is really a shame because this card has many benefits that make it as good or better than most airline reward miles credit cards like Aeroplan credit cards, and it has a whole lot more booking flexibility as well.

You get the same reward return on spending when redeeming for economy class flights of up to 4%, without having to worry about limited reward seat availability, blackouts, only being able to book with one carrier, booking 6 months to a year in advance, booking fees, points expiration, and paying taxes and fees out of your pocket! All these benefits, make this credit card one of the best and easiest to use travel rewards credit cards in Canada with an annual fee that is actually less than the competition and a yearly 2,500 point renewal bonus to boot! The MBNA Smart Cash Platinum MasterCard is somewhat of a saviour for cash back credit cards in Canada. After the disappearance of both the Canadian Tire Cash Advantage MasterCard and the American Express Gold Cash Back Card, it seemed like there was no truly good cash back credit cards left on the market. This card changed all that in 2009 with its non-tiered no annual fee cash reward, platinum benefits and perks, and 3% bonus cash back on all gas and grocery purchases. Not only that, but it automatically issues you a cheque once your cash rewards balance reaches $50, so you get a wonderful surprise in your mailbox every so often! The Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express is one of the only ways for Canadians to earn Starwood Preferred Guest starpoints quickly and easily. Back when the no annual fee MBNA Starwood Preferred Guest MasterCard was still available, it was chosen as the primary credit card by hundreds, if not thousands, of deal savvy consumers over at Redflagdeals. The reason being that the Starwood Preferred Guest rewards program is an incredibly flexible rewards program with a multitude of travel redemption options that offers an incredible reward return value for your points of up to 6% or more! Now that the MBNA Starwood card has been replaced by this $120 annual fee card by American Express, it isn’t quite as popular but it is still an extremely good card especially for high spenders. Many people who used to use the MBNA Starwood card religiously, have also transferred over to, and now use, this card, including myself. The Royal Bank Avion Visa is likely the best travel points credit card that comes with a high annual fee - $120 in this case. It is particularly favoured by business people who spend large sums of money on their credit cards throughout the year because it has no earning maximums, is flexible when redeeming, offers transfers to airline miles, and has a well rounded insurance package. The card itself earns you one Avion point per dollar spent and Avion points can be redeemed for flights, other travel rewards, and merchandise directly through RBC.

Redeeming points the standard way already provides a decent return of up to 2.33% of your credit card spending as noted in the table above.  However, one of the best features of this card is the ability to transfer Avion points to British Airways Executive Club miles. with a 50% bonus during one of the twice annual transfer promotions. The normal conversion rate from points to miles is 1:1 but historically twice per year they offer a conversion bonus such that 1 point gets boosted to 1.5 miles. Considering that British Airways is a member of the OneWorld alliance this allows you to use your newly boosted miles on several airline partners or British Airways themselves. This means a flight inside North America that would normally cost 25,000 miles in most airline reward programs would only cost you 16,667 miles because of the 50% bonus, a significant savings. The Bank of Montreal Mosaik Gold Air Miles MasterCard was one of the best deals going for Air Miles collectors who were tired of getting a measly 20 cents per mile value for their Air Miles, or even less. The reason why it was so good is because it enabled you to book flights anywhere in North America for a paltry 1600 Air Miles. When you compare that to the usual 4800 to 6000 mile cost for coast to coast flights, it is a real bargain. And, if you consider such a flight in Canada typically costs $700 or more before taxes and fees, then you can calculate the value of an Air Mile to be 43.75 cents and the reward return of the credit card to be 2.92%.  Much better than the 1.33% return you get when valuing Air Miles at 20 cents per mile, which is already quite generous by some people’s standards!
